Review: Dillon Francis – Money Sucks, Friends Rule!

After years of remixes, collaborations, singles and several EPs, American producer Dillon Francis has finally taken the step up with his debut album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule! which comes out on the 28th October.

Francis is really funny, check him out on instagram, where you can tell that he is a guy who is loving life at the moment. That’s exactly what you can expect from his new album, a collection of twelve fun tracks and one of the best albums of 2014 for sure.

“It is typical of his previous work; full of energy, fun to listen to and crammed with great beats and drops.”

Francis has been on the scene for several years now, after emerging with the collaboration “Que Que “with producer Diplo in 2010. Since then, he has been busy. With Dave Nada, Francis can be credited as one of the forerunners of emerging genre moombahton, a fusion of house music and reggaeton. He has brought out several singles, including “Money Makin, with A-Trak, in 2012; several EPs, including Something, Something Awesome in 2012 and lots of remixes, including a remix of Toddla T’s “Take it Back“,  a big improvement on the original song.

An album was the logical next step for Francis, and it’s typical of his previous work; full of energy, fun to listen to and crammed with great beats and drops. Get Low, with DJ Snake (famous for this summer’s Turn Down for What ) is the first single of the album, and it is a belter. Francis has absolutely nailed the dynamic beat and you can tell why the song is already popular in nightclubs across Europe. The other single that really stands out is “We Make it Bounce”, with well established Major Lazer and Stylo G, which is probably the song of the album. The song starts well, with Francis and Major Lazer raising the tempo as Stylo G chants the catchy “bounce” in the background. Then the drop, when it comes, is absolutely wonderful and the the song follows that pattern. The rest of the album is as entertaining, the partially live song What’s that Spell with TJR is another song that stood out.

Overall, if you like dance music or if an album full of high-tempo, fun songs sounds appealing, Francis’ “Money Sucks, Friends Rule!” is the album for you. And whilst it is not quite released yet, you can stream the album on Francis’ official website, for free, here
