Why you should get along to York Student Cinema

Tonight marks the first time that the much loved York Student Cinema will be utilising their brand new digital projector. Suitably for such an occasion, the campus’ resident cinephiles will be offering students the chance to see the summer’s most awe-inspiring blockbuster – Godzilla.

The Student Cinema appeared destined to face closure due to the growing obsolescence of the society’s 35mm film projector. Thankfully, the generosity of YuFund and York Alumni in funding the purchase of a new digital projector has served to ensure the long term future of the society. The switch to digital technology also means that the society will be able to procure films sooner after their general release and increase their schedule to up to four films per week.

Accompanied with the society’s full Dolby Digital and DTS cinema surround sound, York students will still have access to a full cinematic experience on campus, with the promise that ticket prices will be remaining the same in spite of the enormous financial injection that the society has enjoyed.

Students can also get involved in the running of a society which has been a staple on campus since the 1960s, with roles including Front of House, Press and Publicity, Tuck and Poster Shop Helpers, Film Reviewers, Projectionists, Fundraisers and Tech Officers. Students interested in getting involved should come along to a Committee Meeting on a  Monday in P/X/001 at 18:15.

Doors open tonight at 7.40pm for an 8 o’clock start in P/X/001, with tickets priced at £3.
