First York has announced alterations to its ‘YourBus’ services between the University of York and the city centre prior to the start of the new academic term.

From the 8th of January, the existing 56 and 66 services will be re-routed to reduce congestion in and around Piccadilly, whilst a new 66a route will be introduced to serve areas lost by the re-routing of the 56 service and the end of the 44 ‘Unibus’ service provided by rival company, Transdev.

The 66 will now form a loop around York city centre, serving Clifford Street on its outbound journey from the University to the railway station, before returning via the existing route on Piccadilly and Merchantgate. The existing free campus travel service between York Sports Village and The Retreat will not be altered. The service will continue to run 24 hours a day during term time.

The 56, which has previously been threatened with withdrawal, will now run via Tang Hall, providing a link between student accommodation in the area and Heslington West. The service will now run via Melrosegate and Fourth Avenue to serve the Morrisons supermarket, before looping around the city centre to serve Kings Manor and York St John University. However, the service will no longer serve Student Castle on Walmgate. Free travel will be offered between Heslington East and Green Dykes Lane.

In addition to these changes, a new 66a service is being introduced. With the service being advertised as running at 20 intervals during the daytime, the service will run from Heslington East interchange and Field Lane on the edge of Badger Hill – replacing part of the route lost when Transdev withdrew its rival Unibus service in December –  before running down Lawrence Street to form a loop around Merchantgate and Walmgate, replacing the service offered by the 56 to Student Castle. Free campus travel will be offered between Heslington East Interchange and Green Dykes Lane.

Other First York service serving the University of York, such as the Number 6 service between Heslington East Interchange and Clifton Moor via Osbaldwick, the UB1 campus shuttle and the Hospital and Clubbers’ buses were not affected by the changes.
