Police say they are investigating allegations of a “serious sexual assault” near Peckitt Street and The Lowther pub between 10.30pm and 10.45pm on Saturday.

The riverside is cordoned off between The Lowther and Tower Gardens this morning.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the incident was believed to have happened near some benches close to the river.

She said: “The suspect is described as Asian, wearing a dark hoody or jumper, dark trousers and a white tee-shirt, and aged between 20 and 30. The area is described as particularly busy at that time of night, and the area will be subject to forensic examinations, searches and house-to-house enquiries.”

The spokesperson said the suspect was slim, about 5ft 10ins tall, and spoke with a local acccent.

She asked the public for patience while the investigation continued and asked anyone with information to phone York CID on 101.
