York gains another Comedy Club

The Burning Duck Comedy Club will provide York’s newest alternative comedy night. If you’re wondering what is meant by alternative, promoter Al Greeves explained the night will feature performances that may be considered “too silly, highbrow or experimental to be booked by the more mainstream comedy clubs”. He went on to say: “This could typically be either in the niche or surreal subject matter they deal with (such as moths) or the manner in which they deliver it, such as through story-telling, musical comedy, sketch comedy or character comedy”.

With an experienced comedy background – he has performed at Edinburgh Fringe, has run London’s underwater themed comedy night ‘Comedy Lake’, and is currently a resident MC at Verve Comedy Cellar in Leeds – Greaves is set to spot and book upcoming alternative talent. The comedy club will welcome national headliner acts but also provide a platform for local performers.

The first night will be held on October 13th in the function room of The Black Swan. Newcastle’s Seymour Mace will headline the bill; he has been described by The Guardian as ‘‘Relentless originality…manic and gripping”. Other performances include musical comedy from Tom Taylor, character comedy from Nicola Mantalios-Lovett, and York’s Peet Sutton as ‘Sir Dickie Benson’. The show will be MC’d by Jack Gardner, the resident MC at ‘Silly Billies’ comedy club in Newcastle.
