After returning from the summer holidays, the University of York Cycling Club (UYCC) found that almost all of their bikes had been stolen from a locked campus bike shed.

In a post on Facebook from the University of York Cycling Club (UYCC) revealed that 13 of their bikes have been stolen from a locked bike shed on campus. They are asking people to keep a look out for any of their bikes being sold on the internet. The club says that they must have gone missing some time after the 11th of September.

When contacted by The Yorker, a spokesperson for UYCC said

“we’re currently in a situation where we have no usable club bikes. All of these bikes would have been used for freshers [sic] but now we are looking for the kindness of local bike shops to lend us bikes for our rides next Sunday. Our plan now is to go through insurance but as many of the bikes are second-hand we are looking at losing a lot.”

When asked in the comment section, Zac Sheppard, University of York Students’ Union Sport President, said they are looking into how the bikes were taken and considering contingency plans so that freshers’ events can still take place. The spokesperson for UYCC echoed the same sentiment, saying that freshers’ events would still be going ahead “just in a slightly different from than usual.”

The club also said that they have passed on all information to the police and campus security, and are letting them take it from here. For further updates and information, the club recommends visiting their Facebook page.

The club has recommended that students keep an eye out for any of the following types of bikes, listed on the web:

8 x Scott Speedster 30 Road Bikes (Black and Green)
1 x Nukeproof Mega am (Black and Yellow)
1 x Bergamont FS MTB (Black and white)
1 x Giant CX bike (Black red and white)
1 x Giant Hardtail MTB (Black and White)
1 x Merida MTB (Black and White)

The Yorker will report any further updates for this story in due course.
