Lucas North is running for Student Activities Officer. Lucas wants to improve university spirit by introducing themed dress up days, as well as proving that first year students can make a difference.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a first year law student, and I’m currently on 2 society committees and member of a few others. I’m also on a YUSU liberation committee and my college JCRC. I also do photography in my free time.

What inspired you to run for Student Activities Officer?

When I came to York things weren’t the way I expected them. I thought societies would be able to do more, and after getting onto LGBTQ social committee I realised the help given to societies isn’t enough. I want to run so that I can put societies into the place I thought they’d be at, and to show out 2016 freshers that firsts years can make a difference as much as others.

Why do you think you’re the right candidate for the role?

I’m the most accountable. Whatever I do in this role, I have another two years of studying here and have to live with my legacy. I’m also dedicated – after one and a half terms here in already on 4 committees and have been to an NUS conference. This coming week I’m involved in sexposé, and another NUS delegate election. No one can say that I’ve held back with doing all I can, and I hope that becoming activities officer will allow me to do even more.

Which of your policies are you most excited about?

The themed dress up days. I’m hoping that they’ll be enjoyable for everyone and will create a real sense of community spirit. (Also Vision decided it was one of the most intriguing policies!)

Who do you think is your biggest competition?

Heather has done loads of RAG in Vanbrugh, and is a strong candidate. Alex is quite well known and so I think a fair number of people will vote for him, too.

If anyone, who are you backing for YUSU President?

Ananna.

The YUSU Candidates Debate will take place at the Lounge on the 14th of February.
