Abigail Fedorovsky is running for the position of Volunteering Officer. She is passionate about social justice and wants to bring students into the decision making process.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a Politics student in Vanbrugh. I volunteered with York Refugee Welcome Week recently, as well as volunteering with a York-based charity called Kyra, setting up new links with the university. I worked on campus as a student ambassador for the charity Chasing Zero and currently as a student ambassador for Gotoco that organises students to teach English in China. I’ve written articles for Nouse and lead the Vanbrugh Christian Union. I used to play squash for Vanbrugh Squash Team and am a member of York Anti-Trafficking Society.

What has inspired you to run for the position?

I’m very passionate about volunteering and social justice in general. I realised that a lot of people on campus don’t realise what volunteering does, or only hear about later in their time at York when they already have other commitments.

Why do you think you are the right candidate for the role?

I have been involved in a wide variety of volunteering experiences, which have taught me valuable communication and leadership skills. This would allow me to encourage all sorts of people to be involved in all sorts of volunteering roles. I understand personally the challenges and benefits of being a volunteer and feel strongly that the University should do more to recognise the hard work that goes on! I have significant experience of the college system and think that it could be a great tool to provide training to equip anyone to confidently volunteer.

Which of your policies are you most excited about?

Probably creating more diverse opportunities for students – I would love if students could come up with their own out-of-the-box ideas and I could support them to make it happen!

Who, if anyone, are you backing for YUSU President?

I haven’t completely decided yet, but I’ve had most contact with Millie and think that she’s great!

Voting is now open and closes on the 19th of February.
