Ellie Meagher (left) and Hannah Higgs (right) are running for the position of Volunteering Officers. Hannah studies Psychology and Ellie studies Applied Social Science. They want to expand Volunteering and fully commit to the role.

Tell us about yourselves.

We’re both in second year! We are both currently on the Volunteering Committee as Events Coordinator and Social Events Coordinator and have also got involved in lots of different volunteering projects such as SASH, Minds in Motion, Life Stories and Dementia Friends.

What has inspired you to run for the position?

We saw how things are run at the moment and we wanted the opportunity to improve that because we’ve found that it isn’t always easy for people to get involved. We want to make volunteering a more prominent part of University life.

Why do you think you are the right candidates for the role?

The fact we are running as a pair means we have more time and energy to commit to the role. We have lived with each other for a year so we know each other well and work well together! We’re passionate about volunteering and are very motivated to make volunteering better!

Which of your policies are you most excited about?

Setting up a 1-2-1 service to help people find volunteering opportunities based on their interests and supporting them through their volunteering. We also want to run termly focus groups to find out exactly what it is people want so we aren’t putting on events people don’t want to go to! But we are really excited about all of our policies.

Who, if anyone, are you backing for YUSU President?

Hmm, tricky question because there are loads of great candidates this year but we’d love to see Habib win because we like his three themes of community, liberty and empowerment… especially community!

Voting is now open and will close on the 19th of February.
