YUSU Elections 2017: Alexander Lake (Sport President)
Alexander Lake is a Third Year History student. Alex seeks to use his previous experience to enact change to York sports through consultation with groups; seeks to make sports at York more competitive; as well as overhauling the York Sport brand.
What inspired you to run for the position?
I’m very proud of the fact I’m both a student and an athlete at the University of York, and therefore I want to make the union the best it can be for the students at the university. I believe it’s very important the students are represented fairly and with their concerns listened to and acted upon. Therefore, this is why I want to get into student politics to give every York student the best experience at York they can have, and leave a legacy for future generations.
What makes you different from the other candidates?
What makes me stand out is that I already know what it’s like to have a job where professionalism is key and this experience will translate into the York Sport Union job. I’m a straight talking and efficient person with a desire to always complete what I set out to achieve which will mean the students of York will have the best sporting experience possible.
How would your policies change student life at York?
My policies will make sure elite sports become even more competitive, that everyone gets what they want out of sport, and that all organisers have the support they need. I have plans to overhaul the York Sport Union brand, introducing more media reports, team colours on campus and live streaming of games for people that can’t get down to watch. These policies will change the way sport at York’s perceived.
What challenges do you expect to face in this position and how will you respond to them?
In any job, and especially a job representing the student body there will always been people that will challenge you. To overcome this, I will form focus groups to discuss the concerns that the student body has, and therefore allow York Sport Union to represent everyone.
What has been your most enjoyable experience at university?
My most enjoyable experience at University has to be winning the Men’s First team game away at Lancaster for the first time in a decade. The atmosphere of the crowd only added to make the experience not just the best at university but one of the best i’ve experienced in sport.
Why should students get involved with sport?
Playing sport is a fantastic way to meet people and developed friendships at university. It’s also a fun way to stay healthy not only physically but mentally as well. The events at York such as varsity and Roses add to enjoyment that students at York will get out of sport. However, with my new media engagement with York Sport will mean people can get involved in other aspects of sport such as journalism and sports filming.
