Jo Cox MP in critical condition following shooting
A Labour MP has been shot and stabbed in her constituency.
Jo Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, is in critical condition following a violent assault in Birstall. A man, described as in his fifties, wearing a white cap, has been taken into custody by the police.
The referendum campaigning groups ‘Vote Leave’ and ‘Remain’ have suspended their engagements today. The Prime Minister announced on Twitter that he would cancel his appearance at a campaigning rally in Gibraltar.
It's right that all campaigning has been stopped after the terrible attack on Jo Cox. I won't go ahead with tonight's rally in Gibraltar.
Siding with ‘Remain’, Cox is a graduate of the University of Cambridge. She has been tipped as an up-and-coming top politician and a government cabinet minister. She is chairwoman of the All Parliamentary Friends of Syria Group.
The BBC has Tweeted an image likely to be depicting the arrest of Cox’s attacker:
As a consequence of the suspension of campaigning, the Festival of Ideas debate between Lord Lawson and Yvette Cooper, due to be held in the Law and Management Building at the University of York, has been cancelled.
