On the 7th of February 2015 the York Dancesport team headed to Sheffield for a day of competitive ballroom and Latin American dancing. The Sheffield friendly competition is held in the Octagon centre at Sheffield University and is an excellent warm-up event for the serious competitions later on this term. York took a 22-strong team who entered in rounds from beginners’ waltz right through to salsa and acrobatic rock and roll. This was also the first competition which our new mascot the Dancesport Duck attended, and played a hilariously central role throughout the day.
Ballroom is always the starting point of these competitions and York team members performed admirably in the waltz, quickstep and even the open tango. Particular congratulations goes to Tim Pilbeam and Nina Hakovirta who progressed well in their beginner’s ballroom rounds. Of the non-beginners, Richard Bennett and Katie Peeling danced very gracefully through a number of rounds and are to be congratulated!
In the afternoon we moved on to the Latin American dancing competition and York had even more success. Congratulations to all of our beginner couples who all got through rounds with their cha-cha or jive and also to Richard Bennett and Chloe Francis for progressing to the quarter finals of the novice cha-cha and jive competitions. Richard continued on good form in the ex-student novice competition with partner Anda Baumerte, they made the final and came sixth.
Rock and roll is another of York’s favourite dances and in recent years we have consistently done well in it. Sheffield was no disappointment, with Louise Lambton and Andrew Grantham coming in sixth in the non-acrobatic rock and roll, and Richard Bennett and Katherine Jackson scaring us all with their lifts in the acrobatic rock and roll to come in third. Once again, well done!
All in all the day was exhausting but well worth it. We have another annual competition, called the Northern Universities Dancesport Competition, next Saturday so the team can take what they have learnt at Sheffield to hopefully do even better next week. Good luck and well done!
